Statement by Andrew Scheer, Leader of the Official Opposition and Leader of the Conservative Party of Canada, on the anniversary of the Armenian Genocide

Today, the world pauses in memory of the innocent Armenian lives taken 103 years ago. The Armenian people endured a degree of suffering which we can scarcely imagine, the wounds of which have still not healed.

This solemn anniversary reminds us again of these events, which still reverberate in our modern world today. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Stephen Harper, our previous Conservative government was the first Government of Canada to recognize the Armenian Genocide in 2006. As we remember the men, women, and children of all ages who perished in 1915, we must resolve to learn the lessons of this awful chapter of the world’s history.

Canada will always be a staunch defender of freedom, tolerance and justice wherever these cherished values are under attack. On today’s anniversary, the entire Conservative caucus join the Armenian community and all Canadians in remembrance, and in the hope that the memory of these events will lead to peace, reconciliation, and a firm resolve to never see these atrocities repeated.
