Recognition of Genocide Would Lead to Artsakh Peace, Euronest Head Says
YEREVAN—Chairwoman of the EU’s Euronest Parliamentary Assembly, Heidi Hautala, told ArmInfo in a recent interview that Turkey’s recognition of the Armenian Genocide will open doors for peaceful settlement of the Karabakh conflict.
Hautala said the European Parliament and Euronest have done much to assist Armenia in achieving international recognition of the Genocide and making Turkey recognize that crime against humanity. “If this finally happens and Turkey recognizes the Genocide of Armenians, it will open doors for peaceful settlement of the Karabakh conflict,” she said. Hautala is sure that “one beautiful day” Turkey will recognize the Genocide against Armenians.
As for the Artsakh conflict and Armenian President Serzh Sarkisian’s statement at the last Euronest session in Yerevan about Artsakh and peoples’ right to self-determination, Hautala said, “In Europe, the principle of the peoples’ right to self-determination has really begun to dominate over others.”
