Carney welcomes tentative U.S.-Iran deal, calls it potential ‘game changer’

(Horizon Media / OTTAWA) — Prime Minister Mark Carney says Canada welcomes progress toward a tentative U.S.-Iran agreement aimed at ending the war and reducing tensions in the Middle East.

Speaking on the sidelines of the G7 summit, Carney said he has reviewed the preliminary framework and described the potential deal as a “game changer” for the region and beyond, particularly if it removes the threat of Iranian nuclear weapons and restores stability to key global trade routes.

The proposed agreement, expected to be signed in Switzerland, reportedly includes steps to end hostilities, reopen the Strait of Hormuz, and ease pressure on global energy markets. Carney said many countries have an interest in ensuring the deal succeeds, noting that de-escalation in the Middle East could also free up international attention and resources for other crises, including Ukraine.

Canada has maintained that Iran must not be allowed to obtain nuclear weapons, while also calling for diplomacy and broader regional de-escalation.
