EU–Azerbaijan talks focus on partnership, energy and regional developments

(Horizon Media) — EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and European Commission Vice President Kaja Kallas held discussions with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev in Baku, shortly after her visit to Yerevan, with talks centring on bilateral relations, energy cooperation and regional dynamics.

According to Azerbaijani sources, both sides reaffirmed the importance of maintaining a strong EU–Azerbaijan partnership. Kallas referenced the joint understandings reached during European Council President Antonio Costa’s recent trip to Baku, which underlined the strategic nature of ties between Azerbaijan and the European Union.

Aliyev highlighted Azerbaijan’s expanding role in supplying energy to Europe, noting that gas deliveries have recently been extended to additional EU countries, including Germany and Austria.

The meeting also included an exchange on the Armenia–Azerbaijan peace track. Azerbaijani officials indicated that economic interactions between the two countries are beginning to emerge, adding that Baku has eased certain transit limitations affecting shipments to Armenia.

Aliyev’s participation via video in the recent summit of the European Political Community in Yerevan was described by Azerbaijani officials as significant. In remarks delivered during the summit, Aliyev criticized the European Parliament, accusing it of bias and warning that its positions could hinder progress toward peace.

The European Parliament had previously adopted a resolution condemning Azerbaijan’s detention of Armenian prisoners and detainees, urging their unconditional release and emphasizing that any lasting agreement must be grounded in respect for Armenia’s sovereignty.

Discussions in Baku also covered cooperation on demining and the planned TRIPP initiative, which is expected to support regional connectivity and economic links.
