Armenians commemorate WWII heroes and Victory Day

On May 9, on the occasion of Victory Day, Armenians visited the Victory Park in Yerevan to pay tribute to the memory of the WWII victims. WWII veterans joined the officials in laying flowers at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, commemorating the heroic soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice to defeat fascism.

About 30 World War II veterans are still alive in Armenia, the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs said on May 9, the WWII Victory Day.

2025 marks the 80th anniversary of the victory in WWII, also referred to as the Great Patriotic War in post-Soviet countries. During WW II, 300 thousand Armenians enlisted in the soviet army, 20% of the population. 200 thousand #Armenians were drafted from other republics. 200 thousand #Armenian soldiers died during the war.

104 Armenians received the Hero of the USSR title. Air Force pilot Nelson Stepanyan was awarded the Hero of the USSR title twice. 70,000 Armenian soldiers were awarded various orders and medals for valor; 27 private soldiers received the Order of Glory.

Notable Soviet-Armenian commanders were Marshal Hovhannes Baghramyan, Marshal Hamazasp Babajanyan, Marshal Sergey Khudyakov (Khamperyants), Marshal Sergey Aghanov and Admiral Hovhannes Isakov.
