Armenian Wrestler Wins Championship, Beating Out Turkish, Azeri Opponents

WALBRZYCH, Poland—Armenian wrestler Valodya Frangoulian was crowned champion on Wednesday at the European Under-23 Wrestling Championship, which was hosted in Walbrzych, Poland. The wrestler beat out opponents from Belarus, Azerbaijan, Turkey, and Ukraine in the 61 kg weight category.

Frangoulian beat Azerbaijan’s Ahmed’nabi Gvarzadilov with a sweeping score of 6:0. Frangoulian then beat Turkey’s Rejep Topali in the semifinals by a score of 9:7. He beat Ukraine’s Andrey Svirid in the final match with a score of 8:3.

In the competition’s 70 kg category, Armenia’s Ishkhan Poghosian lost to Russia’s Rassul Arsanliev in the semi-final match and will fight Belarus’s Aleksandr Karpach for bronze.

In the 86 kg category, Armenia’s Vahe Tamrazian lost his quarter-final match to Russia’s Shamil Goudiamagomedov.
