Armenia’s National Security Service

YEREVAN—Armenia’s National Security Service announced Wednesday that last Friday it had detained a former police office on charges of spying for Azerbaijan.

In an statement the NSS announced that former police colonel Khachik Martirosyan, 60, was detained for allegedly attempting to pass military secrets to Azerbaijan.

Martrosyan reportedly contacted Azeri officials through Baku’s Embassy in Tbilisi last August and allegedly promised to pass on information on Armenia’s military in exchange for payment.

“Azerbaijani secret services asked him to obtain military information,” the NSS said in its statement.

“After acquiring the information, Martirosyan was detained as he was trying to pass it on to his Azerbaijani contacts,” the agency said.

Armenia’s NSS agents reportedly intercepted the delivery of the information to Baku and arrested Martirosyan.

If convicted, he faces a charge of high treason and could be sentenced to up to 15 years in jail.
