Armenia plans to appoint military attaché to Canada in 2027

YEREVAN— Armenia is preparing to appoint a military attaché accredited to Canada as part of efforts to strengthen bilateral defence cooperation and expand military ties with Western partners.
A draft decision establishing the position is scheduled for consideration at the Armenian government’s October 15 cabinet meeting. Under the proposal, the military attaché would assume duties on January 1, 2027, subject to accreditation and approval by Global Affairs Canada.
The position would be covered by Armenia’s existing military attaché to the United States, who would also be accredited to Canada.
The Armenian government says the initiative is intended to strengthen institutional cooperation between the two countries’ defence establishments and make fuller use of opportunities for military and technical collaboration.
Potential areas of cooperation include military instructor training, joint participation in international peacekeeping missions, protection of the rights of female service members and civilian oversight of the armed forces. The government has also identified considerable potential for cooperation in information technology and military-technical development.
Further collaboration could extend to military education, non-commissioned officer training, combat readiness, military medicine and defence policy consultations.
The proposed attaché would facilitate contacts between Armenian and Canadian defence officials, coordinate bilateral initiatives and support official military visits. Yerevan also considers closer defence relations with Canada an important avenue for expanding its cooperation with NATO.
The initiative forms part of Armenia’s broader efforts to diversify its international defence partnerships. Since 2023, Yerevan has expanded its network of military attachés to several countries, including the United Kingdom, Czech Republic, Poland, Cyprus, Lebanon and India, with Kazakhstan added in 2025.
Meanwhile, France, Britain and India have established military or defence attaché positions at their diplomatic missions in Armenia.
