While in Vatican, Aram I raised concerns over Azerbaijan-backed conference held at Holy See

(Horizon Media / VATICAN) – His Holiness, Catholicos Aram I raised concerns during a meeting at the Vatican over the one-sided approaches toward Artsakh and the Armenian Church displayed during a conference organized by Azerbaijan nearly a year ago at the Pontifical Gregorian University.

According to the press service of the Catholicosate of the Great House of Cilicia, Aram I met with Cardinal George Jacob Koovakad, who oversees inter-religious relations, during his visit to the Vatican. The meeting focused on peaceful coexistence and cooperation among religions.

During the discussions, Aram I addressed the anti-Armenian positions advanced during the Azerbaijan-organized conference, stressing the importance of confronting distortions targeting Artsakh and the Armenian Church.

The Catholicosate stated that Cardinal Koovakad provided explanations regarding the Vatican’s dialogue with Azerbaijan and emphasized that his department would continue the necessary work concerning the issues raised by the Catholicos.

The two sides also agreed on the need to broaden the agenda of discussions. At the conclusion of the meeting, Aram I presented Cardinal Koovakad with a commemorative gift depicting the Virgin Mary.

The meeting followed earlier discussions held in Kazakhstan in the summer of 2025, when Aram I had likewise raised concerns regarding the conference held at the Pontifical Gregorian University.
