Azerbaijan considers severing ties with European Parliament

(Horizon Media) – Azerbaijan is considering formally cutting relations with the European Parliament, as tensions rise over a draft resolution concerning Armenia that officials in Baku claim unfairly targets the country.
According to an informed source cited by local media, Azerbaijani authorities are currently discussing the possibility of adopting an official decision to sever ties with the European Union’s legislative body. The move would follow Baku’s earlier suspension of contacts with the institution.
At the centre of the dispute is a draft resolution titled “Supporting democratic resilience in Armenia,” which is expected to be debated this week in the European Parliament. While the text is formally framed as support for Armenia, Azerbaijani officials argue that it includes a number of provisions containing what they describe as unfounded accusations and demands directed against Azerbaijan.
The resolution comes ahead of Armenia’s anticipated parliamentary elections on June 7, 2026. During a plenary debate with representatives of the European Commission and Council, Members of the European Parliament are expected to emphasize the importance of ensuring that the vote takes place free from external interference. Concerns are also expected to be raised over alleged attempts by Moscow to spread disinformation and influence the outcome of the ballot.
In addition, the European Parliament is expected to call for further efforts to strengthen Armenia’s democratic resilience. This follows recent European Union initiatives, including the launch of a new civilian mission to support Armenian authorities in capacity-building and address a range of challenges, such as foreign information manipulation and interference (FIMI), cyberattacks, and illicit financial flows.
A dedicated EU–Armenia summit is also scheduled for May 5, underscoring the bloc’s continued engagement with Yerevan.
If Azerbaijan proceeds with formally severing ties, it would mark a significant escalation in its strained relations with the European Parliament, further complicating diplomatic dynamics in the region at a time of heightened political sensitivity.
