Fallen in war – Marine Sgt. Daniel Vasselian

The remains of fallen Abington Marine Sgt. Daniel Vasselian are scheduled to come home to Massachusetts on New Year’s Eve. A visitation service will be on New Year’s Day and he will buried on the second day of the new year in Abington.

Vasselian, 27, who was on his third combat tour of duty, was killed in combat in the Helmand province in Afghanistan on Monday, his family said.

His remains were flown from overseas to Dover Air Force Base in Delaware Wednesday. On Tuesday, Dec. 31 his remains are scheduled to land at Logan Airport in Boston where State Police will be waiting to escort him home to Abington.

Visitation will be held Wednesday at Quealy and Son Funeral Home at 116 Adams Street in Abington from 3-7 p.m.

A Mass will be Thursday at St. Bridget Church in Abington at 9 a.m. Following the Mass, he will then be buried at Mt. Vernon Cemetery at Ralph G. Hamlin Jr. Lane.

Vasselian’s death came on the same day another Marine from Massachusetts, Lance Cpl. Matthew Rodriguez, 19, of Fairhaven, was buried.

Vasselian had just celebrated his fourth wedding anniversary on Dec. 19, having married his high school sweetheart, Erin,  who also grew up in Abington.
