Carney announces $2-billion deal to expand Canada’s armoured vehicle fleet

(Horizon Media / LONDON, Ont.) — Prime Minister Mark Carney has announced a nearly $2-billion strategic partnership with General Dynamics Land Systems-Canada to build 190 additional Armoured Combat Support Vehicles for the Canadian Armed Forces.

The four-year investment will expand Canada’s ACSV fleet from 360 to 550 vehicles. The vehicles, based on the Light Armoured Vehicle 6.0 platform, will be used for training and operational requirements across the country.

The vehicles will be designed and assembled at GDLS-Canada’s facility in London, Ontario, using Canadian materials and components supplied by more than 600 companies in over 100 communities. The federal government says the agreement is expected to create or sustain more than 6,000 jobs annually over the next eight years.

GDLS-Canada will also become the first company designated as a Strategic Partner under Canada’s new Defence Industrial Strategy. The framework is intended to accelerate military procurement, strengthen domestic supply chains and encourage Canadian defence companies to invest in research, development and skilled workers.

ACSVs are currently deployed with the Canadian-led NATO brigade in Latvia. Canada has also donated 89 of the vehicles to Ukraine and committed an additional 35 at the 2026 NATO Summit.
