Macron reaffirms support for Armenia–Azerbaijan peace process in call with Aliyev

(Horizon Media) – French President Emmanuel Macron reaffirmed France’s support for the Armenia–Azerbaijan peace process during a phone conversation with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, emphasizing the importance of advancing ongoing negotiations between the two countries.

In a statement published on X, Macron said he had discussed regional developments and bilateral relations with Aliyev, while reiterating France’s backing for efforts aimed at achieving peace and stability in the South Caucasus.

Aliyev also confirmed the call, noting that the two exchanged views on Azerbaijan–France relations and on regional and international issues of mutual interest.

The conversation follows Macron’s remarks earlier this month in Yerevan, where he stated that he intended to raise the issue of Armenian hostages held in Azerbaijan with Aliyev. It remains unclear whether the matter was addressed during the latest call.

Nineteen Armenian prisoners, including former Artsakh officials and political representatives, continue to be illegally held in Azerbaijan on fabricated charges.
