Prime Minister Mark Carney issues statement marking Armenian Genocide Memorial Day

(Horizon Media / OTTAWA) – Prime Minister Mark Carney issued an official statement on April 24 marking Armenian Genocide Memorial Day, joining Armenian communities in Canada and around the world in commemorating the victims of the 1915 Genocide.

In his message, Carney noted that Canada formally recognized the Armenian Genocide in 2006, describing it as a “long overdue acknowledgment” of the atrocities committed against the Armenian people. He emphasized the importance of remembrance, stating that it serves as a safeguard against the repetition of such crimes.

The Prime Minister also highlighted that April is recognized in Canada as Genocide Remembrance, Condemnation and Prevention Month, underscoring the need for continued vigilance in confronting hatred, discrimination, and violence.

“Through remembrance, we commit to vigilance – so that these atrocities are never repeated,” Carney stated, reaffirming Canada’s commitment to preserving the memory of the victims and promoting awareness of genocide prevention.
