Minister Jason Kenney Meets with the President of the National Assembly of Armenia –
On May 27, the Hon. Jason Kenney, Minister of National Defence and Minister for Multiculturalism, met with His Excellency Galust Sahakyan, President of the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia, and accompanying Armenian Parliamentarians.
His Excellency thanked Minister Kenney and the Canadian Government for its strong and consistent support of the people of Armenia and of the Armenian community in Canada. He expressed in particular his gratitude to Canada for recognizing the Armenian Genocide and for reaffirming the recognition by way of Motion 587, introduced by Conservative MP Brad Butt and supported by the Government. Canada is one of twenty-seven countries that officially recognize the Armenian Genocide as historic reality and established April 24th as Armenian Genocide Commemoration Day. As Minister Kenney stated in his remarks at the Armenian Genocide Centennial gathering on Parliament Hill, “We salute the spirit of survival of the Armenian people, who continue after generations of tragic history to move forward with hope and dignity in helping us to build this magnificent democracy—Canada.”
This meeting highlighted Canada and Armenia’s close bilateral relations and people-to-people ties, which were further strengthened by the signing of a joint declaration between the Canada-Armenia Parliamentary Friendship Group and its counterpart in Armenia. We look forward to continued collaboration between our two countries based on our shared values of democracy, human rights, and the rule of law.
