(Horizon Media / OTTAWA) — The Leader of the Official Opposition and head of the Conservative Party of Canada, Pierre Poilievre, issued a statement on April 24 marking the 111th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, reaffirming his party’s support for the Armenian people and their pursuit of justice.
In his message, Poilievre opened by thanking the Armenian National Committee of Canada for what he described as its “tireless work in support of a free, united, and independent Armenia,” a notable emphasis that framed his broader remarks. He then paid tribute to the 1.5 million Armenians who were systematically deported and murdered beginning in 1915, stressing that the atrocities led to the destruction of families and immense suffering inflicted solely on the basis of identity.
Highlighting Canada’s responsibility, Poilievre stated that the country must “always stand for truth,” underscoring the need to recognize the Armenian Genocide without hesitation, reject denial in all its forms, and support those who continue to seek justice more than a century later.
The Conservative leader also pointed to ongoing challenges facing Armenians today, specifically referencing the forced displacement of over 100,000 Armenians from Nagorno-Karabakh. He described these developments as a stark reminder that injustice and persecution have not been confined to the past.
Reaffirming that Armenians have the right to live in peace, security, and freedom in their ancestral homeland, Poilievre expressed solidarity with Canadians of Armenian descent and praised the resilience of the Armenian people in preserving their culture, faith, and identity despite repeated hardship.
Concluding his statement, he noted that as the Armenian community marks one of the darkest chapters in human history, Canada’s Conservatives stand with them in remembrance and in the continued pursuit of recognition and justice.
