(Horizon Media / TORONTO) – In a solemn address at the Ontario Legislature, MPP Aris Babikian commemorated the 111th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, paying tribute to the 1.5 million Armenians and 1 million Greeks who perished in what he described as “state-sponsored and premeditated crimes against humanity.”
Speaking as the grandson of genocide survivors, Babikian noted the deep personal significance of the occasion, as Armenians worldwide prepare to mark April 24 as a day of remembrance. He emphasized that the anniversary serves not only to honour the victims, but also to reinforce a collective responsibility to confront historical injustice and prevent future atrocities.
Babikian highlighted Canada’s longstanding recognition of the Armenian Genocide, pointing to acknowledgements by the House of Commons of Canada, the Senate of Canada, and federal and provincial governments, including Ontario. He underscored the importance of continued commitment to human rights, international accountability, and the prevention of crimes against humanity.
Concluding his remarks, Babikian called for April 24 to serve not only as a day of reflection but as a renewed pledge to uphold justice, peace, and the protection of human dignity.
