RamelMedia – Amidst an uptick in tensions between Russia and NATO over its support for separatist militants in eastern Ukraine, Turkish fighter jets, as part of a NATO air battalion, intercepted four groups of Russian aircrafts between October 28-29 over the Black Sea. Two Russian Tu-95 planes accompanied by fighter jets were being tracked by a Turkish aircraft over the Black Sea, while seven additional warplanes were monitored over the Baltic Sea over the past 48 hours.

According to initial NATO statements, several Russian TU-95 strategic bombers are capable of carrying nuclear weapons and were flying over international airspace. While six of the aircrafts immediately returned back towards Russian airspace, two of the warplanes continued to fly over the North Sea whilst being followed by British fighter jets, as well as Portuguese F-16’s.

A Norwegian military spokesman claimed that the incident did not represent a violation of international airspace; however, the large number of aircrafts marked a significantly notable aberration in Russian aerial military activity. Over 100 similar incidents have already been reported this year, approximately three times as many sorties as had been reported in 2013.
