The Republic of Azerbaijan Donates US$ 5 Million to UNESCO – 

 

On 18 July, the Director-General of UNESCO, Ms Irina Bokova and the Minister for Culture and Tourism of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Mr Abulfas Qarayev, signed a Framework Agreement on Cooperation between UNESCO and the Republic of Azerbaijan.

This Agreement foresees strengthening cooperation in all the Organization’s fields of competences and provides UNESCO with a financial contribution of US$ 5 million. The signing ceremony took place at UNESCO Headquarters in the presence of Ms Mehriban Aliyeva, First Lady of Azerbaijan, UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador. 

This ceremony was followed by the official inaugurations of stones sculptures donated by the Republic of Azerbaijan to UNESCO and of the exhibition on art of stone carving. 

During her speech, the Director-General thanked the Azerbaijani authorities for the important contribution made to UNESCO. The Director-General also expressed her gratitude to Ms Mehriban Aliyeva for her personal commitment to UNESCO in her capacity as a Goodwill Ambassador. 

Ms Mehriban Aliyeva emphasized very positive assessment of Azerbaijan’s overall cooperation with UNESCO which is expanding rapidly in the fields of education, the sciences, communication and culture. Ms Mehriban Aliyeva also paid tribute to Ms Irina Bokova’s strong leadership and deep commitment to support the common projects and activities, in line with the Organization’s areas of competences.
