Aivazovsky seascape expected to fetch $420,000 at Moscow auction

(Horizon Media) – A seascape by celebrated Armenian marine painter Hovhannes Aivazovsky, widely known as Ivan Aivazovsky, will be one of the leading works offered at a major Moscow art auction on July 26.

The painting, titled Off the Coast of Yalta, is estimated at $420,000 and is expected to rank among the most valuable lots in the sale, Interfax reported, citing the Moscow Auction House.

Organizers have placed the combined estimated value of the collection at approximately 1 billion rubles, describing the sale as one of the most notable events of the current art season.

Another major lot is Nicholas Roerich’s Idol Place, a pastel created in the late 1900s and valued at 18 million rubles. Auction officials have described the work as being of museum significance, noting the scarcity of surviving pieces Roerich produced while living in Russia.

The collection also includes Mikhail Nesterov’s 1925 painting By the Skete, estimated at $200,000, and Pyotr Konchalovsky’s Pines in Autumn, from the artist’s later creative period, valued at 16 million rubles.

Born in 1817 in the Crimean port city of Feodosia, Aivazovsky became internationally renowned for his vivid depictions of the sea, storms and coastal landscapes. More than a century after his death in 1900, his works remain highly sought after by collectors and continue to command substantial prices at international auctions.
