Armenian Genocide recognized by Spanish city Alboraya

Alboraya, a city in Spain, has officially recognized the Armenian Genocide, becoming the 43rd city in the country to do so.

The city council of Alboraya, which includes representatives from six different political parties, unanimously approved the declaration recognizing the Armenian Genocide. The motion was initiated by the Spanish Armenian Union Ararat and presented to the council by Concha Villena Sierra of the political coalition Compromís, according to orer.eu.

The declaration received the backing of the Socialist Party (PSOE), Compromís, the People’s Party (PP), VOX, Alboraya Actúa, and the United Left (Esquerra Unida-Unides Podem per Alboraya).

While presenting a brief history of the Genocide, Villena stressed the significance of the city officially acknowledging this crime against humanity. Following her remarks, representatives from all political factions spoke in condemnation of the Genocide carried out by the Ottoman Empire. They emphasized the importance of global recognition and called on Turkey to offer reparations for the inflicted harm.

The meeting was attended by Ararat Ghukasyan, head of the Armenian Union “Ararat,” who expressed gratitude to the council members during his speech.

“Political differences and affiliations are set aside when it comes to crimes against humanity,” he stated.

Council members also declared their readiness to support the Armenian community in Spain in raising this issue to the national level, including the Spanish Parliament.
