Socialist International condemns sentencing of Armenian hostages, calls for immediate release

(Horizon Weekly) – The Socialist International has expressed “outrage and deep concern” over the recent sentencing of Armenian hostages in Azerbaijan, urging Baku to release all remaining Armenian prisoners as a meaningful step toward lasting peace in the South Caucasus.

In a statement dated February 11, the global alliance of social democratic parties denounced the February 5 ruling of the Baku Military Court, which handed long prison terms to 15 Armenian defendants, five of whom received life sentences. The detainees are among 19 Armenians still held in Azerbaijan.

The organization stated that such harsh sentences run counter to the spirit of reconciliation and ongoing efforts to stabilize the region. While taking note of recent developments, including the signing of the Washington Declaration and the reported release of four Armenian prisoners in January 2026, the Socialist International emphasized that these steps remain insufficient as long as others continue to face lengthy imprisonment.

Joining other international voices, the statement calls on Azerbaijani authorities to build on the current diplomatic momentum by releasing all Armenian detainees in their custody. According to the organization, such a gesture would constitute a significant act of goodwill and contribute meaningfully to regional stability.

The statement adds to growing international concern over the fate of Armenian hostages, an issue that continues to cast a shadow over broader peace negotiations between Yerevan and Baku.
