Levon Aronian wins Freestyle Chess Grand Slam

(Horizon Weekly) – Grandmaster Levon Aronian, a former captain of Armenia’s national chess team who now represents the United States, captured the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Final, a rapid competition played under Fischer Random rules.

Aronian secured the title by defeating Magnus Carlsen, the former classical world champion and current top-ranked player in the FIDE standings, winning their final match by a score of 1.5–0.5, Armenpress reported.

The tournament was hosted in South Africa and featured a lineup of the world’s leading chess players competing in the unconventional format.
