François Legault announces resignation as Quebec Premier

(Horizon Weekly) – Quebec Premier François Legault announced on Wednesday that he will step down from his position, ending more than seven years at the helm of the province’s government.

According to reports confirmed by Canadian and international media, Legault said he will remain in office temporarily to ensure an orderly transition while his party, the Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ), selects a new leader. The leadership change comes ahead of Quebec’s next provincial election, scheduled for October 2026. Legault first came to power in 2018, leading the CAQ to two consecutive majority governments.

In recent months, the CAQ has faced declining public support, with opinion polls indicating growing voter dissatisfaction. Legault’s resignation is expected to trigger an internal leadership race that will shape the political landscape in Quebec in the lead-up to the next election.
