Dr. Ari Meguerditchian named President of Canadian Society of Surgical Oncology

MONTREAL— Dr. Ari Nareg Meguerditchian, a prominent Montreal-based surgical oncologist and Associate Professor of Surgery and Oncology at McGill University, has been named President of the Canadian Society of Surgical Oncology (CSSO), a national organization dedicated to advancing excellence in cancer surgery and patient care.

The appointment was confirmed by McGill University’s Department of Oncology on October 6, marking another important milestone in Meguerditchian’s distinguished medical and academic career. He succeeds Dr. Carolyn Nessim, who served as president from 2024 to 2026.

A surgical oncologist at the McGill University Health Centre and Scientific Director of St. Mary’s Research Centre, Meguerditchian specializes in cancer care, particularly breast cancer and melanoma. His research focuses on improving treatment quality, patient outcomes and the use of health information technology in clinical practice.

Having been involved with the CSSO for nearly two decades, Meguerditchian described his appointment as a privilege and expressed his commitment to strengthening the organization and supporting Canadian surgeons specializing in oncology.

Meguerditchian also serves as Vice-Chair of the Surgical Oncology Specialty Committee of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. His appointment to lead the CSSO recognizes his longstanding contributions to cancer treatment, medical research and surgical education.

Meguerditchian is also a former student of Montreal’s Armenian Sourp Hagop School, where he received the Governor General’s Bronze Academic Medal in 1993, reflecting his longstanding connection to the city’s Armenian community.
