Armenian church on the brink of collapse in Bitlis, Turkey

Tert – An Armenian church in Turkey’s south-east is facing the threat of collapse amid the authorities’ total indifference and failure to complete its renovation.

Situated in the historical Armenian town of Bitlis, the St Karmrak church was a steadily standing construction until the 1990s. Its pillars later began dilapidating. In 2011, rectangular pillars decorated with Armenian murals totally collapsed, Mezopotamyaajansi.com reports.

Speaking to the website, a deputy mayor of the city said they had to stop the repairs due to a government failure to assign a board of trustees to arrange and follow the process.

Local residents have said that the church premises now serve as a parking lot for municipality employees.
