Armenia, Iran to build new bridge over Araks River

Armenia and Iran have reached an agreement to build a new bridge over the Araks River, aimed at enhancing transit connectivity between the two countries, Radar.am reported, citing Iran’s Tasnim News Agency.
The announcement followed a meeting between Iran’s Minister of Roads and Urban Development, Farzaneh Sadegh, and Armenia’s Minister of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure, Davit Khudatyan.
During the meeting, the Iranian side emphasized the importance of the North–South and Persian Gulf–Black Sea transit corridors, highlighting the need to strengthen Armenia’s road, rail, and logistics infrastructure to facilitate trade flows.
The two sides also agreed to construct a second bridge at the Meghri–Norduz border crossing, modernize the existing bridge, upgrade terminals, and adjust fees for freight transport. These initiatives are aimed at easing the movement of cargo vehicles between the two countries and creating a comprehensive transit package, set to be finalized in the coming months.
Minister Sadegh identified the reopening of the Julfa–Yerevan–Georgia railway as a key factor in advancing regional transit. She also noted that the Iranian president’s visit to Armenia marks a turning point in the deepening of bilateral cooperation in the transport and logistics sectors.
According to her, the land route connecting the Persian Gulf and the Black Sea holds strategic importance. Iran has confirmed that the railway from Julfa is already accessible and that its extension from Nakhichevan to Yerevan has been approved.
