The Armenian National Committee of Canada (ANCC) is deeply concerned by the recent agreements reached between Armenia and Azerbaijan, which were imposed under the threat of force. These developments pose a serious threat to Armenia’s sovereignty, security, and the fundamental rights of the Armenian people, particularly in light of the ongoing Azerbaijani threats for renewed war and bloodshed.
The negotiated document fails to address several critical concerns, including the clear demarcation of Armenia’s borders and the withdrawal of Azerbaijani forces from Armenia’s sovereign territories. It also neglects to secure the return of Armenian prisoners of war who remain unjustly and arbitrarily detained in Azerbaijan.
Most concerning, however, is the complete disregard for the rights and security of the Armenians of Artsakh. The people of Artsakh have already faced ethnic cleansing and forced displacement following Azerbaijan’s genocidal aggression. Yet this agreement makes no mention of their right to live safely and with dignity in their ancestral homeland. By omitting these crucial issues, this agreement effectively legitimizes Azerbaijan’s campaign of violence and persecution against the Armenian population of Artsakh.
Additionally, Azerbaijan’s ongoing demands — including territorial concessions, constitutional changes in Armenia, and the forced settlement of Azerbaijanis within Armenia — are a direct assault on Armenia’s independence and regional stability.
The ANCC categorically rejects any agreement that disregards Armenia’s national interests and endangers the rights and security of the Armenian people. We stand in solidarity with the people of Armenia and Artsakh in their fight for justice, peace, and self-determination.
