ANCA to host genocide education briefing on Capitol Hill

WASHINGTON, DC – The Armenian National Committee of America will host a Capitol Hill staff briefing on December 3 on expanding genocide education in U.S. schools, reports the Armenian National Committee of America. The event, titled Preventing Genocide Through Education, will spotlight the bipartisan Armenian Genocide Education Act and ongoing nationwide efforts to strengthen classroom instruction on genocide, human rights, and historical justice.

The briefing will feature two key speakers from The Genocide Education Project. Roxanne Makasdjian, Co Founder and Executive Director, will outline GenEd’s curriculum work and partnerships with schools and state leaders. Kerri Flynn, GenEd’s Education Director and a veteran social studies teacher, will share classroom perspectives shaped by twenty five years of teaching and her experience developing a Human Rights and Genocide course in Missouri. Additional Washington, DC social studies teachers will also participate.

The session will provide an overview of genocide education across the U.S. and highlight GenEd’s teacher training programs and curriculum initiatives designed to help students understand the Armenian Genocide, its denial, and its lasting consequences.

A central focus of the discussion will be H.R. 2585, the Armenian Genocide Education Act of 2025, introduced by Representatives Dina Titus, Gus Bilirakis, Ted Lieu, and David Valadao. Backed by sixty three bipartisan cosponsors, the bill would direct $10 million over five years to develop educational materials, online resources, and teacher training through the Library of Congress.

Supporters say the legislation is a practical step toward confronting denialism and equipping students with the knowledge needed to prevent future atrocities.

Those in Washington, DC can register to attend the December 3 briefing online, and advocates nationwide can urge their Representatives to support H.R. 2585 by visiting anca.org/education.
