Waterloo (Ontario, Canada) Regional Police Chief Matt Torigian will retire from the service to become Ontario’s deputy minister of community safety, according to a news release issued Thursday.
\n
Torigian, who became police chief in 2007, will officially retire from the police service on June 8. He will work under newly minted Community Safety and Correctional Services Minister Yasir Naqvi, who was minister of labour up until last month.

“The appointment of Chief Torigian confirms that the Waterloo Regional Police Service is considered to be a leader in policing across the province,” police services board chair Tom Galloway said in a news release.
\n
The police services board will meet soon to select an interim chief and begin searching for Torigian’s replacement.
