Mike Morrice enters Green Party leadership race

(Horizon Media / OTTAWA) — Former Kitchener Centre MP Mike Morrice has entered the race to become the next leader of the Green Party of Canada, as the party prepares to choose a successor to longtime leader Elizabeth May.

Morrice is one of two approved candidates in the contest, alongside Ottawa-based educator and longtime Green organizer Nira Dookeran. Candidates must meet additional membership recruitment and fundraising requirements by September 30 to appear on the final ballot. Green Party members will vote from November 2 to 13, with the new leader to be announced on November 14.

Morrice represented Kitchener Centre in the House of Commons from 2021 to 2025, becoming the first Green MP elected in Ontario. He narrowly lost his seat in the 2025 federal election and was subsequently appointed deputy leader of the Green Party. He has already been nominated to contest Kitchener Centre again in the next federal election.

During his time in Parliament, Morrice developed a profile around climate action, affordable housing, affordability and strengthening the Canada Disability Benefit, while frequently emphasizing cross-party cooperation.

Morrice has also maintained good working relations with the Armenian-Canadian community. In November 2024, he joined the Armenian National Committee of Canada (ANCC) for a press conference on Parliament Hill challenging Azerbaijan’s suitability to host the COP29 climate summit. Morrice and the ANCC highlighted Azerbaijan’s poor human rights and environmental record, as well as concerns surrounding the forced displacement of the Armenian population of Artsakh, Armenian prisoners held in Azerbaijan and the suppression of civil society and political opposition.

The leadership contest comes as the Greens seek to rebuild their national presence and define the party’s direction following May’s decision to step down as leader.
