Maple Ridge, BC. Member of Parliament for Pitt Meadows-Maple Ridge, Marc Dalton issued the following statement today on-going clashes in the Nagorno-Karabakh region:

“The continuing conflict between Azerbaijan and Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) is extremely disturbing  with mounting deaths and tens of thousands of civilians fleeing the Armenian enclave and surrounding area.

There can be no military solution to this conflict and ask that the brokered ceasefire of October 10th be adhered to. There needs to be an end to military operations that are indiscriminately targeting schools, hospitals and civilians.

It is very troubling that Turkey, as a NATO ally, has been arming Azerbaijan with weapons using Canadian technology in violation of Canadian export controls. Prime Minister Trudeau has said an investigation has commenced but this investigation needs to be made public.

Conservatives continue to call on the Government of Canada to support the right of self-determination for the people of the region. Canada should work with the global community to secure peace and it is our hope that OSCE-negotiations resume quickly within the framework of the Minsk Group process.”
