Crane Collapse at Yerevan Construction Site Leaves Three Dead

YEREVAN — Three people were killed on September 29 after a construction crane collapsed at a building site in Yerevan’s upscale Defans residential development on Tichina Street.

Armenia’s Rescue Service said it received an emergency call at 2:10 p.m. and dispatched firefighting and specialized rescue teams to the scene. The area was subsequently closed off as investigators began examining the circumstances surrounding the accident.

The Investigative Committee said two of the victims were Iranian citizens and the third was an Armenian citizen. Rescue crews recovered all three bodies from beneath the damaged crane structure later in the day.

Authorities have opened criminal proceedings over possible violations of workplace protection and construction safety regulations. Investigators have not yet announced what caused the crane to fail.
