Armenia’s Samvel Terteryan crowned U20 world champion after defeating Azerbaijani rival

(Horizon Media / BRATISLAVA) — Armenian Greco-Roman wrestler Samvel Terteryan captured the U20 World Championship title on August 17, defeating Azerbaijan’s Javidan Nahmatov in the 77 kg final in Bratislava, Slovakia.
The tightly contested championship bout ended 1–1, with Terteryan winning on criteria. The 19-year-old Armenian scored first and successfully defended from par terre in the second period to claim his first world title.
Terteryan dominated the tournament, winning his first four matches without conceding a single point and outscoring his opponents 26–0 before the final. He defeated Georgia’s Giorgi Gogelashvili 6–0 in the semifinal.
The final was a rematch of the 2026 U20 European Championship gold-medal bout in July, where Terteryan also defeated Nahmatov, winning 4–0. With his victory in Bratislava, Terteryan completed a European and World championship double in 2026.
