(Horizon Weekly) – Earlier this week, Canada’s Ambassador to Armenia, Andrew Turner, met with former Human Rights Defender Arman Tatoyan. In a brief post shared on social media, Ambassador Turner said the meeting focused on current developments in Armenia and Canada’s support for Armenia’s democratic reforms. The ambassador regularly meets with political figures, civil society leaders, and former officials as part of Canada’s engagement in Armenia.
Tatoyan served as Armenia’s Human Rights Defender from 2016 to 2022, a period during which he became widely known for his reporting on human rights violations, border security concerns, and the humanitarian consequences of the 2020 war. Since completing his mandate, he has remained active through the Tatoyan Center for Law and Justice.
Recently, Tatoyan announced his decision to enter electoral politics and confirmed that he will run in the next parliamentary election with his newly created political movement. His campaign messaging has emphasized the rule of law, public accountability, and security-related issues.
The meeting with Ambassador Turner comes as Canada continues to expand its diplomatic presence in Armenia following the opening of its embassy in Yerevan in 2023.
