Consecration of Kirkuk’s newly built Armenian church

Consecration of Kirkuk’s newly built Armenian church –

Is it unreal? Yes, it is! But it is also true! And the story is genuinely ARMENIAN. Armenian in deed and spirit.

While battleground after battleground ISIS has been spreading terror in Northern Iraq and Northern Syria and a major offensive by the Coalition forces is underway around Mosoul, just 109 miles to the south the Armenian families of Kirkuk, Iraq’s richest oil-producing district, undertake the construction of their new church dedicated to St. Mary Holy Mother of God. And they do this without much rhetoric and fuss. Nothing unusual. It’s the thing that they do. This is who they are! Period. Just thirty families. A beautiful house of worship. Next to their Homenetmen Center, where their boy-scouts and girl-scouts gather every Sunday, while their parents attend Holy Badarak (Holy Mass) and serve their homemade Armenian recipes. Any questions?

The consecration of this new spiritual edifice has just taken place in full ritual by the hands of His Eminence Archbishop Avag Assaturian, Primate of the Armenians of Iraq.

God bless you all, brave compatriots! Our hearts are with you.

Garo Armenian
