UK MP warns of “crackdown” on church in Armenia

(Horizon Weekly) — In a commentary published in The Times, UK Reform Party MP Danny Kruger has sounded the alarm over the escalating political crackdown on the Armenian Apostolic Church, warning that the actions of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s government threaten the fabric of the country’s Christian heritage.
Kruger, in his piece titled “Armenian PM’s crackdown is worry for all Christians,” emphasizes that Armenia — the world’s oldest Christian nation — is now witnessing the arrest of senior clergy and prominent church supporters on what he calls fabricated charges. He notes that Church leaders, including bishops and influential backers like Samvel Karapetyan, have been detained and that the state has seized Church-owned assets in an effort to curb the institution’s influence.
Kruger stresses that Pashinyan’s campaign against the Armenian Apostolic Church risks deepening divisions at a time when Armenia faces serious security challenges from neighbouring states and ongoing regional tensions. Kruger calls on Christians worldwide to speak out in defence of the Church and urges Armenian authorities to reconsider their approach.
