Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney commemorated the 110th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, paying tribute to the victims of the 1915 atrocity while drawing attention to the ongoing suffering of Armenians in Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh). In his statement, Carney strongly denounced the persistent denial of the genocide and emphasized the importance of recognizing historical injustices amid ongoing human rights concerns in the region.
“Despite the passage of 110 years, this genocide remains actively denied by its perpetrators. Armenian people continue to face persecution and oppression. Most recently, this was tragically exemplified by the forced displacement of over 120,000 indigenous Armenians from Nagorno-Karabakh in September 2023, following months of an unlawful blockade, which deprived them of their most basic human rights.
As we observe this solemn day, we remember those who were lost, and we commit to building a stronger, more tolerant Canada that is free of discrimination and hate,” the statement reads.
