Senior Armenian clerics detained

Several senior clerics from Armenia’s Aragatsotn Diocese have been detained and taken to the Investigative Committee.

Sources tell Panorama.am that the home of Bishop Mkrtich Proshyan, the leader of the Aragatsotn Diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church, was searched overnight before he was taken in for questioning. He is the nephew of Catholicos of All Armenians Karekin II.

In addition, the priest of Saghmosavank Monastery, Father Paren Arakelyan, is said to have been detained.

The Investigative Committee has not yet issued a statement on the reported detentions, but told Panorama.am that it would provide details later.
