Daniel Varuzhan’s ‘Song of Bread’ Published in English

Hamazkayin Canada announced the publication of SONG OF THE BREAD, the first complete English translation of Daniel Varuzhan’s HATSIN YERGE. This bilingual edition features the masterful translation of Varuzhan’s final opus by Tatul Sonentz, with a preface and notes by Viken Tufenkjian.

Song of the Bread is the first complete English translation of Hatsin Yerge by Daniel Varuzhan. Tatul Sonentz’s masterful interlingual rendition of Varuzhan’s final book of poetry transports readers to a rural, often magical landscape, where human toil, nature, and love fuse indissolubly into the irrepressible impulse to create.

Daniel Varuzhan was born in the Prknig village of Sepasdia (Sivas). He studied at Venice’s Mourad-Rafaelian School before obtaining a scholarship to attend the University of Ghent in Belgium from 1905 to 1909.

in 1912, he became the principal of St. Gregory The Illuminator School in Constantinople.

In 1914, he founded the Mehean literary group and magazine with Gostan Zarian, Hagop Oshagan, Aharon Dadourian and Gegham Parseghian. The movement aimed to start an Armenian literary and artistic renaissance.

Varuzhan wrote four major volumes of poetry: SHIVERS, THE HEART OF THE RACE, PAGAN SONGS and SONG OF BREAD

In 1915 during The Armenian Genocide Varuzhan was deported towards Chankiri and gruesomely tortured to death. Nearly 1.5 million Armenians were killed at the hands of the Ottoman Empire in 1915, during World War I.
