The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkey has dismissed news spread in the Turkish media saying that the Prime Minister of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdoğan ordered to open the Alican checkpoint on the border with Armenia. As reports “Armenpress” citing the official website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkey, the Spokesman of the Ministry stated that the circulating rumors on the opening of the Armenian-Turkish border do not correspond to the reality.
Statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkey Regarding the Alican Border Gate Opening
The report which appeared in a newspaper today (4 July) claiming that the border gate between Turkey and Armenia will be opened does not reflect the truth.
As it is known, the border between Turkey and Armenia was closed in 1993 after Armenia invaded Azerbaijani territories.
The opening of the border could be brought into question only in the framework of the developments providing a comprehensive and sustainable normalization in the Southern Caucasus. In this context, it will be decisive that Armenia shows its willingness to settle its disputes with all of its neighboring countries and takes the necessary steps accordingly.
