Armenia taking measures to prevent spread of polio after disease outbreak in Syria –
Measures continue to be taken in Armenia to exclude the spread of poliomyelitis in the country after the outbreak of the disease in Syria that has a large Armenian presence and from where ethnic Armenians fleeing hostilities have arrived in the past two years or so.
The large-scale vaccination campaign in the entire region began in early November and will continue for the next six or eight months depending on the epidemiological situation.
According to the Ministry of Health of Armenia, policlinics across the country at present examine the medical records of all children under 6 and invite those who haven’t got the vaccination to get one.
“Work is being carried out with parents who refuse that their children be vaccinated. Also work is being conducted with citizens who arrive from Syria. Children aged under 15 who arrive from Syria and have not been vaccinated against polio are also invited for vaccination,” the Ministry’s press service said.
According to the World Health Organization, Armenia is among the countries with the low risk of polio spread.
