Japan announces plans for opening of embassy in Armenia

YEREVAN—Yerevan city officials unveiled on Wednesday a memorial statue dedicated to the tragic nuclear bombing of the Japanese city of Hiroshima at the end of World War II. Located at the Children’s Park near the Yerevan municipal building, the statue commemorates the countless innocent people who lost their lives and endured the devastation that was inflicted by the nuclear attack from the United States.

The unveiling ceremony was attended by a delegation of Japanese officials. The Armenian president’s assistant Varuzhan Nersessian addressed the Japanese guests, welcoming them to Armenia and emphasizing the importance of Japanese-Armenian relations.

Meanwhile, a Japanese official announced that Tokyo is planning to open a Japanese embassy in Armenia by the beginning of next year.

“Our Government is carrying out preparatory work for the opening of an Embassy of Japan in January next year,” said Takashi Kurai, the head of the Japanese mission in Armenia, in an interview with Armenpress.

\n

“It will contribute to the deepening of bilateral relations in political, economic, cultural, and other spheres. Armenia and Japan already have old cultural ties. But economic ties are unfortunately not very advanced. In Japan, there are people who have spent decades dealing with the issues of strengthening Armenian-Japanese relations and I hope that the number of those people will continue to grow.”

Armenia’s President Serzh Sarkisian made an important trip to Japan in 2012, when the two governments agreed to work on deepening ties between their two countries.
